Kitimat has landed the largest private sector investment in the history of Canada for the second time, namely LNG Canada. The first time was in the 1950s when the then Alcan developed the hydroelectric facilities to support the power intensive industry of aluminium smelting. At the time, the development of the plant and power station was considered the most expensive project ever attempted by private industry.
The opportunities both Rio Tinto’s modernized aluminium smelter and LNG Canada’s development have created are huge for small to large businesses. With its history of heavy industry, Kitimat has the essential infrastructure, an experienced labour force and a comprehensive service sector in place. With its location, harbour, growth potential and industrial heritage, Kitimat is a promising trade and manufacturing location. The District of Kitimat continues to ensure Kitimat is open for business and the investment opportunities are endless for all sizes of business.
