Rio Theatre

Vancouver, BC Best Community Impact:
Nominee
Employees: 27 In Business Since: 2008

Built in 1938 The Rio Theatre is one of the last remaining indie theatres in Vancouver. The Rio would not have survived without the community support in 2012 to change the BC liquor laws, allowing bar service in Movie Theatres. And in 2018 we launched a successful campaign to raise $8million to Save The Rio from demolition. Thanks to all the community support The Rio Theatre Property is now a 100% community owned, and the only one of its kind. The Rio is beloved because it supports a range of local film makers, performance artists and community events. All of our events are diverse and inclusive appealing to a broad community spectrum. The Rio is also an award winning, successful business, a live performance venue/single-screen cinema that is thriving and leading the way as a model for other independent theatres to succeed while supporting the community. .
