Karen Irving Art

Vancouver, BC Best Community Impact:
Employees: 1 In Business Since: 2014

Karen is a self-taught artist who was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and moved to Vancouver in 1998. She now resides in Gastown, Vancouver, British Columbia. She has been painting since 2005 and became a full- time artist in 2014. At the age of 25, she worked as a Chief Purser on a Caribbean Cruise Line in the West Indies, including St. Lucia, and Martinique. This is where the love of rich of vibrant colours like reds, oranges, and blues came to influence her art work. Her work has energy and movement; a living testament of blending textures, layers, shading and contrasts

Her passion for art started whilst recuperating from a major brain infection in 2004. She started painting her thoughts and feelings down on canvas as personal therapy. And to her surprise she found out that others enjoyed her work – the journey began as painting became her one passionate pursuit.

The subjects Karen chooses to paint are a glimpse in time of her life’s accounts of the past and current events that gives true meaning to Karen’s resilience and experiences through thought-provoking metaphors of imageries.

Karen is a Collective Member at the Gallery Gachet and a Member of the Community Arts Council of Vancouver. To mention a few of the Art Highlights – November 2018 – Out of Maelstrom Members Exhibition, Gallery Gachet; 2016-2018 Eastside Culture Crawl (4-day Exhibition). Karen has curated and been the liaison for many exhibitions over the years. In 2017-2019 she volunteered as a Community Liaison with the Community Arts Council of Vancouver – “Outsiders Arts Festival” – facilitating numerous workshops to artists in the community. Karen has developed and facilitated the “Business of Selling Your Art” series workshops over the last number of years. She loves helping and back to the art community.
